چکیده

We examine the spin-dependence of b-quark production at large transverse momentum in polarized proton-proton collisions. The leading-order (LO) 2 → 2 subprocesses, g+g → Q+Q and q+q → Q+Q have a large ‘analyzing power’, as measured by the average spin-spin asymmetry <âLL>, at large pT , approaching −100%. The contributions from next-to-leading order (NLO) 2 → 3 processes are also discussed and found to be dominated at large transverse momentum by subprocesses with a large and positive partonic level spin asymmetry leading to strong cancellations with the LO predictions. The results suggest that bquark production might constitute an interesting test of the spin-dependence of NLO QCD but they also point up the importance of a full calculation of the complete O(α3S) spin-dependent corrections for a successful extraction of the polarized gluon distribution. Similarities to gluino pair production are also briefly discussed.

Aspects of four-jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions.

We examine the intrinsic spin-dependence of the dominant gg → gggg subprocess contribution to four-jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions using helicity amplitude techniques. We find that the partonic level, longitudinal spin-spin asymmetry, âLL, is intrinsically large in the kinematic regions probed in experiments detecting four isolated jets. Such events may provide another qual...

5 Phenix Spin Program , Recent Results

Acceleration of polarized protons in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provides unique tool to study the spin structure of the nucleon. We give a brief overview of the PHENIX program to investigate poorly known gluon and flavor decomposed see quark polarization in the proton, utilizing polarized proton collisions at RHIC. We report PHENIX first results on transverse single-spin asymmetry i...

Dihadron interference fragmentation functions in proton-proton collisions

We study the production of hadron pairs in proton-proton collisions, selecting pairs with large total transverse momentum with respect to the beam, and small relative transverse momentum, i.e., belonging to a single jet with large transverse momentum. We describe the process in terms of dihadron fragmentation functions. We consider the production of one pair in polarized collisions (with one tr...

Beyond the proton collinear factorization in heavy quark production in pA collisions at low x

We consider heavy quark production in high energy pA collisions and investigate the contribution of interactions of valence quarks of proton with the nucleus. The often made assumption that valence quarks of proton can be factored out is justified only if the nucleus saturation momentum is much smaller than the heavy quark mass. This is not the case in phenomenologically relevant situations. Br...

Heavy-Quarkonium Production in High Energy Proton-Proton Collisions at RHIC

We update the study of the total ψ and Υ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at RHIC energies using the QCD-based Color-Singlet (CS) Model, including next-to-leading order partonic matrix elements. We also include charm-quark initiated processes which appear at leading order in αs, but which have so far been overlooked in such studies. Contrary to earlier claims, we show that t...
